Abstract

The present communication deals with the addition of 23 species under 19 genera of three families: Erebidae, Noctuidae&Nolidae of moths from Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. Two new species, Ophiusa pseudotirhaca Singh & Ranjan, sp. nov. and Rusicada pindraberensis Singh & Ranjan, sp. nov. are described and one species, Pericyma cruegeri (Butler, 1886) is reported for the first time from India. This is an addition of about 17% of moths to the already recorded 138 species from Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.

Abstract

Arctiidae is a major Noctuoid family of order Lepidoptera with estimated number of 10,945 species from the Globe (Heppner 1991) including more than 500 from India (Kirti & Gill 2010). Members of this family tend to be small to medium size with aposematic colours. The meta thoracic tymbal organ, a pre-spiracular counter tympanal hood and a pair of pheromonal glands between the ovipositor lobes are the main apomorphic characters of family Arctiidae.

Abstract

Majority of the arctiid moths can be studied under two subfamilies i.e., Arctiinae and Lithositnae and the members of this group are of much economic importance.They can be identified from the meta thoracic tymbal organ, a pre-spiracular counter tympanal hood and a pair of pheromonal glands between the ovipositor lobes. Arctiid moths are an integral and complex part of our ecosystem and play a vital role in its functioning.

Abstract

The information given in this research paper is based on 81 species representing 70 genera of moths collected during the survey conducted from October 05-08, 2016 by the first two authors. As many as 20 species are reported for the first time from Jharkhand as well as from Gangetic plains: Bastilla joviana (Stoll), Erebus ephesperis (Hubner), Creatonotos interrupta (Walker), Leucania venalba Moore, Yepcalphis dilectissima (Walker), Ericeia inangulata (Guenee), Chrysodeixis acuta (Walker), Agrotis segetum D&S, Entomogramma fautrix Guenee, Xanthodes albago (Fab.), Miaromima naessigi (Kobes), Scopelodes albipalpis Hering, Pseudoteleclita sp., Armiana longipennis (Moore), Tyspanodes linealis (Moore), Hyperythra lutea (Stoll), Cleora sp., Thalassodes veraria Guenee, Zeuzera coffeae Nietner, Bamra sp.,. The area was surveyed for the first time to study the diversity of moths.

Abstract

Genus Eudocima Billberg is represented by 11 species from India. Four species viz., Eudocima homaena (Hübner), Eudocima hypermnestra (Stoll), Eudocima materna (Linnaeus) and Eudocima phalonia (Linneaus) are collected and studied for the first time from Bihar and Jharkhand. External genitalia of all the studied species has been illustrated and studied. A checklist of Indian species of Eudocima is provided.

Abstract

An updated checklist of 164 valid species (including subspecies) under 55 genera of superfamily Daepanoidea, family Drepanidae representing four subfamilies: Cyclidiinae, Drepaninae, Oretinae and Thyatirinae has been compiled. The detailed information about distribution within India as well as in other countries, first reference, synonymy has been provided for each species. Clarifications regarding distributional limits within India are also given.

Abstract

In this paper, we report Ambulyx tattina (Jordan, 1919) from the Great Nicobar, a new addition to the Sphingid fauna of India. Additionally, we report four species of Sphingidae i.e., Apocalypsis velox Butler, 1876, Cechenena helops helops (Walker, 1856), Pergesa acteus (Cramer, [1779]), and Theretra silhetensis (Walker, 1856) for the first time from Nicobar. An updated checklist with 28 species under 18 genera of Sphingidae of the great Nicobar Island is given.
